The Royal Purple is the yearbook at Kansas State University. I joined as a staff photographer a little late, in September of 2020. I wanted to use the Royal Purple as a way to diversify my photography work while getting involved with an on-campus organization. As a transfer student, getting involved on a new campus during a global pandemic was difficult. I learned a lot while on staff with the Royal Purple, especially about writing cutlines and collaborating with others to produce high quality photographs. My work with the Royal Purple also required accountability, multitasking skills, responsibility and the ability to meet deadlines.

AMAYA

Amaya is an engineering student at K-State. My second semester on the Royal Purple staff, I took photographs of two engineering students for use in a profile over the engineering department. To do this, I worked with Amaya to find a time and a setting that helped describe what she does as a student. I learned more about photography for print publications, and I had to get creative with locations to capture Amaya in her element.

MORRIS FAMILY MULTICULTURAL CENTER

The Morris Family Multicultural Center was a new building at K-State in 2021. These photos of the center were assigned to me during my second semester as a Royal Purple staff member, and the unique photos around the center were for use in a yearbook spread. To get my photos, I utilized the environment and surroundings I was given when I arrived that day. I learned more about the importance of creativity. I was able to practice my skills with my manual camera settings and become more familiar with photography for print publications.

AARON

Aaron is an engineering student at K-State. My second semester on the Royal Purple staff, I took photographs of two engineering students for use in a profile over the engineering department. To capture my photos, I worked with Aaron to find a time and a setting that helped convey what he does as a student. I learned more about effectively communicating with my subject and the importance of meeting deadlines.

DERBY DINING CENTER

My second semester on the Royal Purple staff, I picked up an assignment for photos around the newly renovated Derby Dining Center. K-State did a lot of updating and changing to the beloved Derb'. Taking good photos during a global pandemic was challenging, but I was able to knock these out by utilizing proper communication with the director of the center. I learned more about working on a deadline and writing cutlines.

ANDREW

My first semester on the Royal Purple staff, I photographed Andrew, a student majoring in bakery science at K-State. I took these images in a studio located in Kedzie Hall. Photographing in-studio was a new concept for me, and I definitely have more to learn. I was able to practice my camera settings while learning more about posing and properly utilizing light.
